These are my thoughts, ideas, fun things I find interesting and my own observations of our society. I am open to comments, banter, discussions, debates and hopefully lots of people that find some of them useful.

How to get motivated – 5 Things to keep you on track!

As this is my first Blog I thought I would keep it Coaching based. Something to stimulate your minds and that you can refer back to from time to time. If it helps that’s great, and if not feel free to comment and let me know what you want me to write about.
These 5 things are meant for everyone, but especially for people that are struggling to get out of bed in the morning and perhaps not working regularly or just need to make a few tweaks to their lifestyle to get motivated.

1) Clear the clutter!
Before you set goals, before you chase your dreams! I would advise you to simply do one thing. Clear the clutter! Whether its physical mess in your home, deleting files for your PC/Tablet based desktop or meditating to clear out your mind. Get rid of things that serve no purpose.
This allows you to feel comfortable in the environment. If everything is a massive mess how are you expected to feel good? To feel motivated to have guests in your home? To job hunt and keep going after weeks of rejections? To begin writing on your laptop for your dissertation if your desktop is full of multiple files that you can’t keep track of? This will distract your mind and de motivates you from what you are doing at that moment.
In order to be motivated to do something you must NOT place any distractions or obstacles in your own way!
An example is, you could be trying to apply to several jobs online from home. But you have the TV on as background noise, You Tube playing a full album with the volume up and you are sitting on a messy bed full of books, magazines and at the same time you mobile phone keeps going off every 30 to 40 minutes from text and calls. This is de motivating to the core, as it’s too distracting to most people to be able to concentrate on the exact thing they need to be doing.
Have a clear out, put the books away, set the phone to silent, switch the TV off or lower the volume or perhaps choose which is the better background noise, the TV or the You Tube channel?
Spending some time to have a clear out of everything will make you feeling good and allow you to be able to be motivated towards the real task or goal at hand. Doing this can also make you feel energised as it’s a decision making process to clear out clutter, delete certain files, throw away things that are no longer needed and switch mobile’s or TVs off.
Decision makers are often happier people as they take action. So have a clear out and feel good.

2) Waking up with a short term plan (1 day planning)
There is nothing better than waking up in the morning and knowing exactly what you are doing on that day! It gives you energy and purpose!
A technique that I feel works really well is to simply write a small list just before you go to bed at least two or three hours before sleeping, so as not to stimulate your mind too much resting.
Never have more than 4-6 things on the list. You wake up in the morning and take a quick look at the minor tasks and then off you go! Get through them within the time limit you set for the day and feel 100% motivated!
The list can come in many forms from post it notes on the fridge, set as the desktop picture on your laptop/tablet or pc, the notes in your mobile handset or a piece of paper stuck to your wall or tucked in your back pocket. The choice is yours.
Some goals can be large or small, important or minor. Just depends what you need to motivate yourself? I love this technique and often use it to get day to day tasks done quickly.

3) Loving what you are doing?
Very often we feel de motivated because we don’t actually like what were are doing? It could be something simple like every morning before work you always go for run, it used to make you feel good but now you feel annoyed and frustrated about it. Well? Change it? Perhaps going for the run after work may rejuvenate your drive? Or maybe try different types of training may be better? If you don’t like something that is supposed to be fun, why do it?
Having a love of the things you do regularly is the essence of motivation. It powers us and gives us energy as we are excited to do them!
Sometimes things that used to make us happy no longer do but we don’t really register it as we are too busy to notice as life is so hectic these days.
So maybe have a good think now about what it is you are currently doing? What is no longer motivating you and what could replace it?

They can be anything you like:
Drinking less – Used to be fun but now the hangovers are not worth it!
Does your job make you happy? – If work is getting you down, are there other departments to move to or even a career change as a long term goal (be aware of the consequences of doing this and plan appropriately)
Is your relationship enjoyable any more? Think of new ways to have fun and be happy together if it’s got a bit stale and repetitive?
Spending too much time alone at home? Perhaps take up a hobby or join a group of people in your community? Catch up with old friends and family who you may not have seen for a while?

There are hundreds of little tweaks you can make to adjust and improve your motivation with things you really want to do!

4) Set some realistic but small goals
If you are struggling and feel de motivated its can often be counter productive to suddenly set massive life changing goals as you just won’t have the willpower or motivation to do this at that current time. You may not have the confidence to even believe you can achieve the goals you set and so you will be further de motivated. This often happens when people set unrealistic goals and then wonder why they feel worse after setting them!
So literally take some minor goals that are easy to do and begin making plans to achieve them in a short space of time. In the beginning this could be to simply go for a 10-20 minute jog 2 times a week, add one or two more healthy foods to your regular shopping list, buy a new set of steel toe capped shoes for your job as the old ones are worn out etc.
Tasks or goals so small that they barely seem to take any conscious effort, but over time you will begin to build up momentum and want bigger goals and more to do. It will also make you feel good as the tasks get ticked off each day.
So you will begin to slowly get motivated to seek larger and more ambitious goals as time goes on.

5) Where is your focus?
This is not about Goal Setting, this is about where your focus is, they are two very different things! Goals setting is what you choose to pursue now and in the future. Focusing on something gives you the strength to filter out de motivating distractions as you know exactly what you are focused on. They do go hand in hand but here we are talking about Focus.
An example of this in my own life was when I began Coaching and I would often get job offers to return to work in the Media industry. But because I was focused and committed to Coaching the people I was working with, setting up my site and my company, I did not lose track of what I was motivated to do.
If I was not focused solely on Coaching I may well have accepted an offer and returned to doing something that in effect did not motivate or make me happy any more. But my focus was strong and so I did not get de motivated by any temptations from recruiters or old colleagues wanting me back at any point.
Another method could be if I am focused on losing weight and I remind myself of this every day, then I may well begin to succeed at this. It may make it easier to say no when people offer me desert as I am focused on what I want.
In today’s society there are so many distractions it’s actually a skill to be able to focus on one thing for more than 5 minutes. Phones, laptops, the kids, relatives and friends popping over randomly, your workmates coming over to your desk to gossip….the list is endless!

So be very aware of your focus. Where are you going today? What are you doing at this current time? Does it serve you and what you are focused on right now? It allows you to head in the specific direction you want to go and ignore any distractions along the way.

I hope some of what I have written has helped you all in some way to feel motivated and energised in your lives! Looking forward to responding to all your comments.
